"History, Disrupted" in the media
Content from Unfinished, the Professor Buzzkill podcast and Lost City Books
It’s been a busy week of interviews and events surrounding History, Disrupted.
On Monday, I sat down with Dr. Joseph Coohill, host of the Professor Buzzkill podcast, to kick off the new season of his popular show. We covered a wide range of topics with particular attention to how Twitter and Facebook have influenced the spread of historical information and misinformation, and the future of history in a Web 3.0 world. Listen to the interview on Apple podcasts:
Then, on Tuesday, I sat down with Damon Beres, Editor-in-Chief of Unfinished Media. Some may remember in September 2021 that we hosted a History Club episode at Unfinished Live in New York City. This week, Damon and I chatted about a number of issues raised by History, Disrupted, including distrust in expertise, the pros and cons of social media, and the positive and negative possibilities of Clubhouse, Web 3.0 and cryptocurrency. We also talked about the current incentive structures built into the social Web and my belief that,
We talk a lot about outcomes when it comes to the web and social media, but I think we need to be equally talking about the incentives… Are we good with those incentives? … Or do we actually need to design completely new incentives for the next iteration of the web?

…then listen to our Twitter Spaces conversation, wherein Damon strongly (yet politely!) disagrees with my recommendation to not share links to news articles on social media:

Finally, on Friday night, we celebrated the release of History, Disrupted with a book signing at Lost City Books in Washington, D.C. More than 50 vaccinated and masked friends and supporters joined us for an event that warmed my heart on a cold January evening. The event was filmed by C-SPAN and will air in 1-2 weeks on C-SPAN.org. In the meantime, the live-stream is on YouTube:
